THERMAL RUNAWAY

Thermal runaway is huge concern for cells, modules and battery packs’ manufacturers. It refers to a situation where a material, typically a battery or a heating element, experiences a self-perpetuating increase in temperature due to the release of energy, which can lead to catastrophic failure. When looking at a lithium ion cell, the causes of thermal runaway may come from :

  • internal or external short circuit
  • overcharge
  • over-discharge
  • external heating
  • deformation

All these situations may lead to temperature increase in the cell and consequently exothermic reactions may occur leading at the end to a thermal event in the battery pack.

Cell and battery pack manufacturers are constantly improving the safety and it starts by evaluating the risks at the lab scale when working on the electrochemistry. There are different thermal runaway trigger methods and using local heaters is one of them. Neoheater can be assembled on a cell to increase locally the temperature in order to evaluate if a thermal runaway occurs.

Applications: In electric vehicles (EVs), but also batteries for light mobility, aerospace, consumer electronics, or renewable energy systems.

THERMAL MANAGEMENT

Heating films could provide controlled heating or maintain a steady temperature within a system, ensuring that components remain within their optimal operating temperature range.

  • Batteries :

Flexible heaters are commonly used in electric vehicles (EVs) and portable electronics to manage the temperature of lithium-ion or other rechargeable batteries.
Batteries need to stay within an optimal temperature range for efficiency (for example in the case of LMP technology), safety, and durability. If batteries (or fuel cells) are too cold, they may lose efficiency or even become damaged. Conversely, if they overheat, they can enter thermal runaway, causing dangerous conditions. Heating films help maintain the battery’s temperature within a safe range by providing gentle, consistent heat to prevent cold-induced performance drops or to help getting to the right temperature in case of cold starts.
Heating films can also integrate sensors to regulate the battery temperature and  maintain safe operating conditions.

  • Laboratory or industrial settings

Heating films are used for a variety of purposes, such as temperature maintenance, spot heating or thermal insulation.
Many test processes require a stable and uniform temperature. Heating films help achieve this by providing direct and controlled heat to specific areas, preventing localized overheating or cooling.

THERMAL COMFORT

Heating films are more and more integrated into interiors of automotive, rail, aviation, and also in wearable systems, such as gloves or coverall.
In comfort systems, flexible heaters provide a steady, evenly distributed source of heat. In EVs, for example, one strategy consists to place different heating patches in the interior to distribute localized heat when needed.  Similarly, wearable heating elements (e.g., gloves) use films to maintain warmth across the entire garment, enhancing comfort and thermal efficiency.

DEICING / DEFOGGING

Outdoor sensors, cameras, lidars, visors, equipment in space exploration, industrial systems, automotive optics are vulnerable to :

  • Freezing, which can impair the optical clarity, cause mechanical damage, or lead to equipment malfunction.
  • Condensation, which can blur the image or interfer with sensor readings. Condensation is particularly problematic in environments with frequent temperature fluctuations, such as in foggy conditions or when equipment moves from a cold to warm environment.

By preventing condensation (misting) and freezing, heating films ensure that sensors and optics continue to function accurately and reliably, even in extreme weather conditions or environments with high humidity or rapid temperature changes. Their efficient, flexible, and energy-conscious design makes them an ideal solution to protect sensitive equipment in a wide range of industries.
